In the exhibition Indonesian Disjunction discussed in a previous post,
I showcased two panels from the DCDNC/DCDNT series. Both later went
into the collections of women; Susi Johnston and Valentina Audrito,
both of them living in Bali. Valentina bought No. 1 and Susi bought No.
3. When these paintings were in the Indonesian Disjunction show, I was
invited to extend my work beyond the canvas and onto the walls. I
painted a kind of mural around each piece, then Susi and Valentina
asked me to come and do the same for the paintings in their new homes.
In March 2011, I finally had the opportunity to do this, as well as
playing a mini-tour with my band Jenny (will tell about that in next
post), and a solo exhibition at the same time. The exhibition, URGNT
SLNC | URGENT SNDS is still up at Deus Ex Machina, (Canggu, Bali).
Three days after the opening of the exhibition, URGNT SLNC | URGNT
SNDS, I installed Panel No. 1 at Valentina's house, in the Canggu area.
The house is really artistic, with great architecture. Not surprising,
because Valentina is an architect and Abhi (her husband) is a designer,
and they run an architecture practice in Bali with offices in a
separate pavilion in front of the house, which itself is filled with
light, mostly open spaces, scattered with their unusual artworks and
objects with visual themes. There's even a series of egg-themed
furniture and lighting, really out-there stuff (designed by Valentina -
- Abhi actually gave me an egg table lamp to take home), and hanging on
all the walls are works of art (I recall a Farhan Siki, a Keith Haring
- - and now my work!). Susi told me the house has been featured in
design magazines. There's so much I could say about the house and my
encounter with Abhi and Valentina, maybe in another post. I forgot to
bring my pocket camera to record the process of installation, but Abhi
recorded it all with his camera, maybe I can get the results later and
share them.
The day before, I installed Panel No. 3 at Susi's. She was the one who actually initiated my solo exhibition at Deus. Susi is a real character, who I will surely write more about in another post. For starters, she's been around for more than half a century, lived in Bali for over 15 years, has a graduate degree in art history, writes, runs a textiles business and a gallery of art and antiques called Macan Tidur (the sleeping tiger), and has thousands of interesting stories from her "wasted youth" that are really amazing to me. More about that later. Meeting Susi has definitely been one of those important moments in my life. Yeah yeah, I'll definitely tell you later, it's a long story. :) Bit of background here, Susi's house is actually pretty cool, modern, minimalist, white, located on the outskirts of Canggu where it's still quiet and peaceful. In the afternoon people pass on bicycles, others jogging, down the lane in front, which runs through rice paddies, then heads down toward the beach. When you enter the main door of the house, you're in a vast open space with a selection of objects of art and antiques from various cultures of Indoneisa; there's a wood panel from a raja's coffin, a primitive bamboo ladder, old weaving tools, the roof finial from an ancient wood mosque, bronze vessels, and many other objects, carefully and sparsely arranged. Adjacent to this space are the kitchen and the home office of Bruno (Susi's husband). I installed Panel No. 3 in a guest room on the second floor.
